Friday we are docked in Punta Arenas, Chile. We have been here twice before so we will take the shuttle into the town and try and find a nice place for lunch. They have wonderful crab in this area of Chile.
Last night we were invited to have dinner with Jamie and Dana Logan. They are the cruise director and assistant cruise director on the ship. They have been married for 25 years and have been with Regent for 14 years. We do not remember ever sailing with them before but might have. At any rate, dinner was very nice. Sharon and Les Duncan were also at the table. They are from Ohio but have moved several time with the Air Force for 11 years and then in the corporate world. They were also on the Voyager from Aukland to Beijing in 2014 along with us but I did not meet them at that time. But she did look familiar to me.
We took the shuttle into town and walked around for about one hour. We were looking for a place to buy lens wipes but could not find them at CVS here. Even stopped in a glasses shop but they only had the spray bottles. So no luck. We were going to have lunch in town but decided to eat on the ship as the restaurants do not open until noon. And we would probably eat too much.
This is the area where we were docked. A long ride into town. But they have great shuttle service for the passengers who do not go on a tour.
The QM2 had to tender into town. They were probably left off close to the downtown area so it is fairly convenient for them. And the waters were quiet so the tender ride was probably fine.
This is a local ship that was docked in the down town area.
During our walk, we walked to the beach area and found all these birds. They are not penguins as these birds fly. But at first glance they do look like penguins.
Tons of them down on the beach. This is not swimming weather. Not sure it ever is.
Just to show that these guys fly and how many there were.
Even more out on the dock area. This dock is no longer in use by boats of any size.
We continued the walk and just wanted to show you how delightful this town is.
We found it interesting that they trim the trees so that the cars can still park on the street. The entire street was lined with these trees or bushes. Not sure what they are called.
Stopped by a bus shelter to prove we were in Punta Arenas. We did dress warmly. Seems I wore the same coat the last time we were here.
We continued to walk following our noses until we arrived at Plaza de Armas. This is where we catch the shuttle. We were lucky we got there just before the shuttle arrived to take us back to the ship.
We had lunch in Compass Rose as when we were returning to the ship, three tour groups also arrived so La Veranda would probably be crowded. Then nap for Bob and then he did go swimming. I had already walked over three miles so for me that was enough exercise for one day. Maybe I will swim tomorrow.
The QM2 is anchored here too. So the town was crowded with lots of tourists. It really is great that Regent provides the shuttle service free of charge. Because we are really out of town. Takes about 15 minutes by the shuttle bus.
Cocktails and dinner and then we might finished watching the movie "Everest". Just started it last night but only watched a little of it before we turned it off.
