Buenos Aires - Day 1

This is Saturday the 20th of February and we are docking here in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  This is day one of three days here.

Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina, and the second largest metropolitan area in South America.  It is located on the Rio de la Plata on the southeastern coast of Argentina.  The combined population of the Greater Buenos Aires area is around fifteen and a half million.

The ride to get to the port gives you a nice view of the modern city.

The port is located to the south of the city.  But the city itself has spread out from the original area.

Taken with the long lens, the hotel Sheraton.

We are docked here with two other ships, MSC Posiea, and Zaandam.  And lots of containers.  It is a real working port.

To get to the terminal building, you must take a port shuttle.  These are some of our passengers getting on the port shuttle ready for their tours.  Bob came down to the dock early but I waited until our bus number was called.  He said they were packing them into the shuttle.  Lots of folks had to stand for the trip to the terminal but it is a short ride.

This is me getting off the ship.  The man behind me always tried to be first.  Not sure what his problem was.  We all get seats on the bus but not the shuttle.

This is a sculpture of a flower.  It opens and closes like a real flower does during the day.

One of the boat clubs along the river.  Our guide told us that this river is the widest in the world.  Not sure is that is true.

Our tour was to the River Tigre and the Delta.  We did the same tour in 2012.  One of the boats we rode for the river cruise.  People live in the delta.  It is made up of several islands.  There is no running water on the islands but they do have electricity.   Several of the homes look like summer homes or weekend getaways.  But others are the main house for the family.  The children go to school but water.

This house is typical of the houses you will see along the way.

This is a shopping boat.  The people place a bag or the like on their dock is they want the grocery boat to stop.  Then they buy what they need.  It is more expensive that going to the regular store but if you run out of something, it is nice to have this service.  The boat comes around twice a week.

And other homes are quite nice with a nice mode of transportation.  The tides of the river rise and fall so lots of the houses are built on stilts.

This is our boat with the passengers getting off.

On the way back to our cruise ship, we stopped in this section of the city to visit a Cathedral.  We were here the last time but did not have enough time to enter the Cathedral.  It is a beautiful church.  Looks like new from the outside.

But hard pews.  No cushions.  And a large pipe organ in the loft.

A real nice stairway leading up to the organ.

The outside of the Cathedral.

And just another view of this Cathedral.

We returned to the ship and it was already 3pm so we headed up to the pool grill for something to eat.  I had chicken wings and Bob had a grilled tomato and cheese sandwich with fries.  We do not usually get the fries but they were quite good.  And we had our own salt and pepper to use.  We do hope this condition ends soon.

Bob took a late nap and I worked on the sweater I am knitting.

Did not swim today but did get to walk about 2 miles.  Not so great but better than nothing.  Dressed for cocktails in Mariner Lounge.  Farsie, our bar man, told us he is leaving in four days.  He wanted to be on board for our anniversary.  Not sure why.

Dinner in Compass Rose.  Both of us had a different pasta dish.  Then back to the suite to work on uploading these pictures and the lights out.

Tomorrow we have to vacate our suite for about 2-3 hours.  We will take the shuttle into town and walk around.  Being Sunday, not sure if many of the shops will be open early.  We will try and have lunch in town as we cannot get back on the ship until 12:30pm.
