Here are the pictures Bob took on our tour the other day.
This is the dock area where our ship was docked. These smaller boats are the ones the local people take to travel to different cities on the Amazon. There is no road from Manaus to the south, only to the north.
The local people live in these houses. They are built on stilts for when the river rises. This year the rains have not come as expected. The last time we were in the Amazon, there was a lot of flooding.
So much traffic on the river that they have these floating gas stations.
This is the boat we took to get to the meeting of the waters. That is me in the white shirt and Noel is in the red stripe shirt and Tom is in front of me.
Bob taking a selfie.
The only dolphin we saw. He or she looks gray to me and not pink.
Here you see the black water of the Rio Negro and the "white" water of the Amazon. I think it looks brown but they call it white.
It takes several miles for the waters to completely mix to the white level.
I think this is where the waters are mixing.
A typical floating house on the Rio Negro.
These are also called floating houses. When the river rises, the houses move with it.
And a typical floating village. The building with the blue at the bottom is the local church.
We stopped here to transfer to the smaller boats to take us to the lily pads. This restaurant is also floating.
And another floating house. Here the laundry was being hung to dry.
These are the small boats we rode in. Ten persons to a boat. Bob and I were in the front seat.
This is the large boat we took to get to the lake.
We are following the first boat with the guide hanging off the side.
Some of the large lily pads in the lake.
Lots of birds in this area. I do not know the name of this bird but it seems to fly in pairs.
And a hawk.
He turned so Bob could take his picture.
And of course, egrets.
These two young boys came out to sell us candy. The boy in the front is 8 and his brother is 5.
Our motor decided not to start so this guy came and towed us until we finally got our motor running. Seems he flooding the motor.
Hope you enjoyed the pictures. More to come from day two in Manaus.
