Saturday we anchored off Boca da Valeria, Brazil. This is an Indian village located between Parintins and Santarem.
Life here is a startling contrast to life in Brazil's modern Amazonian cities of Santarem and Manaus. This is a tiny fishing village so you would get to see and experience the culture of village life.
You need to tender and surrounding the tenders are several canoes with families begging for money.
We got to swim in the morning for one hour and then breakfast. I then went up to the Observation Lounge to knit or needlepoint and stayed there quite a while. Bob did go out and take some pictures and then he went to the village but did not stay long. We were here in 2012 and there was not much to see and the children surround you asking for money.
These are some of the small boats that come right up to the tender. Each one has a small child and a sloth. They want to get money so that you can take pictures of the sloth. You can see the guy with the hat sitting on the side of the tender holding the sloth.
They do try and get real close to the people so you can pet the sloth. Our crew tries to keep them away but it is hard to do and help us get on or off the tender.
These pictures were taken from the top deck of our ship. so we did not have to pay any money.
The tenders have to go up this small stream so that only one tender at a time can be there. The other tenders have to wait for the stream to be clear. It is too narrow for two tenders to pass.
One of the local girls doing her job to keep the boats near the tenders.
And a close up of one of the sloths. This one turns out to be a three toed sloth.
Each boat has some children on it. The sloth might be the family pet.
This young guy used it for a pillow.
You can spot our cabin by the top I have on the balcony drying. Can you spot it?
Some of the homes in the village.
And our home away from home for the past 50 some days.
The homes are built on stilts because in the rainy season, this area will be flooded.
More of the village houses.
And this is the village church.
The local animals enjoying a drink.
They did have needlepoint in the afternoon and two new ladies joined us. Mary is from Ottawa, Canada and I had met her in the Observation Lounge. I encouraged her to come. She did not know that they gave out the projects.
Trivia was hard today. Lots of questions about Europe. We only got 7 correct. And we feel lucky we got that many right.
Dinner in Prime 7 tonight. I had a crab cake and then the small plate of a seafood platter. Still too much food. So no dessert for us.
We finished watching Spotlight and I recommend it. Really well done. Lights out.
